Late summer in the idyllic Lower Engadine: Ursli helps his parents with the hard work on the alp. He has a deep friendship with Sereina, who is the same age as Ursli and also spends the summer with her parents in the nearby Maiensäss. When part of the harvest is lost on the way down to the alp, Ursli's family has to get into debt with the wealthy shopkeeper of the village. Ursli's world collapses as he is forced to give his goat Zila to the rich grocer's son Roman. When he is only given the smallest bell for the traditional Chalandamarz procession and is mocked by the other children as "Schellen-Ursli", he embarks on a daring adventure to fetch the big bell from the icy Maiensäss.
