At the Swiss border, James Larkin White is arrested. He is suspected of being the missing Swiss sculptor Anatol Stiller. The vanished artist, with whom White is confused, is accused of having been involved in the so-called “Smyrnov Affair.” The prosecutor, White’s court-appointed lawyer, and even Stiller’s wife—who has traveled from Paris—begin to doubt his true identity.
