Karl Barth - for some the Swiss theologian is the church father of the 20th century - for others a heretic - a heretic who constantly provokes the powerful of the world.

Barth is one of the few theologians to take a clear stand against the Nazi regime and becomes one of the strongest voices in the resistance against the Nazis. During the dark years of the war, Barth is a voice of hope for many desperate people.

After World War 2 - by now a star among theologians - Karl Barth does not allow himself to be instrumentalized by either the capitalist West or the communist East, and is once again attacked and defamed for it.

His private life also gives rise to discussion. The married theologian and family man falls in love with the young Charlotte von Kirschbaum. A love story as beautiful as it is tragic takes its course.

This film sets out to find the voice of Karl Barth. Where does this man come from, who does not shy away from controversy and who becomes the moral authority for many people of his time?
