The 75-year-old Giuseppe de Metrik (Paolo Villaggio) spent 30 years in Switzerland as a foreman at the Broyer company. After his early retirement, he returns to his family in Puglia, who remained in Italy throughout his stay in Switzerland. Many years later, as an old man, Giuseppe returns to Switzerland with his small, blind granddaughter Carla (Francesca Pipoli). He wants to ask his former employer for money for an eye operation - the last hope for the girl. What should have been a short trip becomes for both Giuseppe and Carla a journey like they would never have dared to dream...
